The Star-Spangled Banner Reimagined: Chinese Guzheng Meets America’s Anthem

I’m thrilled to share a very special project with you — my new arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner, performed on the Guzheng.

The Guzheng is a traditional Chinese zither with a history of over 2,500 years. Known for its shimmering tones, expressive vibratos, and wide dynamic range, the instrument has long been used to tell stories and evoke deep emotion. As a Guzheng performer/composer, one of my greatest passions is bringing this ancient instrument into new musical conversations — especially through classic melodies that audiences around the world recognize.

Arranging America's national anthem for Guzheng was both a creative challenge and a heartfelt experience. My goal was to honor the strength and dignity of The Star-Spangled Banner while introducing the soft, lyrical spirit of the Guzheng. The result is a fusion of grandeur and grace — a meeting of East and West in one of the most symbolic songs in American history.

This piece also continues a growing collection of my Guzheng interpretations of beloved Western music. From the spiritual calm of Amazing Grace to the timeless beauty of Pachelbel’s Canon in D, I’ve loved exploring how the Guzheng can breathe new life into these familiar melodies, offering a fresh yet respectful perspective through its distinctive timbre.
