What does it mean to truly feel in the modern world?
Surrounded by lights, screens, and endless noise, do we still remember how to listen to silence, to nature, to ourselves?
My latest release, “404: Lost in Neon,” is a contemporary Guzheng composition that explores this emotional tension. It’s a story told through strings, rhythms, and textures — one that begins in stillness and ends in open questions.
❖ A Modern Soundscape Featuring Guzheng & Band Instruments
This piece begins with an acoustic Guzheng solo — raw, intimate, and grounding. But as the melody unfolds, new layers slowly emerge: Electric guitar, Bass, and Drums.
Each instrument adds momentum and color, building a modern soundscape that fuses traditional Chinese instrumentation with contemporary pop-rock textures.
This isn’t fusion for the sake of contrast — it’s about contrast as emotion. The Guzheng speaks from the soul, while the band mirrors the chaos of daily life.
The first verse and chorus build steadily, like a city awakening — energetic, but emotionally distant. Then suddenly, after the chorus, everything stops.
In that suspended moment, I return to a free-form Guzheng improvisation — no beat, no distractions. Just the timbre of ancient wood and strings. A reminder of where we come from. A call to come back to ourselves.
From there, the journey begins again — the band returns, the rhythm resumes, but something has shifted.
The final section of 404: Lost in Neon doesn’t wrap things up neatly. Instead, it repeats the main theme in different octaves, creating a feeling of movement without conclusion — like walking through a city at night, thinking, searching.
It’s an open ending — a musical metaphor for where we are as people today. Still navigating. Still questioning. Still finding our way back to what’s real.
❖ Why Guzheng in This Context?
The traditional Chinese instrument Guzheng (Chinese zither) is over 2,000 years old, yet its voice feels timeless. In this piece, I wanted it to coexist with modern instruments, not in competition, but in conversation.
It reminds us that even in a world full of artificial light, there’s always a quiet, organic voice trying to speak — if we choose to listen.

❖ Exploring a Similar Vibe: Out of the Blind
If you enjoyed 404: Lost in Neon, you might also appreciate my earlier original, Out of the Blind. Like 404, it blends the ancient timbre of the Guzheng with Western instrumentation — piano, electric guitar, bass, and drums — creating a sound that’s cinematic, energetic, and deeply emotional.
Out of the Blind is layered with driving rhythms from the band, giving it a sense of forward motion and urgency. It’s a bold departure from traditional Guzheng music, reflecting the tension between modern life and timeless introspection.
Both pieces showcase how the Guzheng can be more than a traditional instrument — it can converse with contemporary sounds, tell cinematic stories, and explore emotions that resonate in today’s world.
